“Cancer Research UK to Close 200 Stores, Revamp Retail Strategy”

Charity shop patrons were surprised to learn that a well-known British high street brand is set to close approximately 200 stores across the country in the next year and a half. Cancer Research UK, established through the merger of The Cancer Research Campaign and the Imperial Cancer Research Fund in 2002, currently operates more than 600 stores in the UK.

Responding to evolving external and retail environments, Cancer Research UK announced a new strategy to revamp its retail operations to increase funds for cancer research and enhance the experience for customers, supporters, staff, and volunteers. The charity plans to downsize its core high street chain to around 320 top-performing shops over the next two years, with about 90 closures by May 2026 and up to 100 more by April 2027.

However, amidst the closures, Cancer Research UK disclosed intentions to open 12 new out-of-town superstores in the upcoming two years. This move sparked debate among enthusiasts and resellers, with concerns raised about the profitability of charity shops due to pricing strategies that may deter potential buyers seeking bargains.

As the charity shop climate faces criticism for high pricing, some individuals shared experiences of encountering steep prices in charity shops, impacting their shopping decisions. While demand for second-hand clothing is high, the closure trend of charity shops, including Cancer Research UK’s plan, raises questions about the sector’s sustainability in the face of competition from online resale platforms.

Acknowledging the impact of the closures on stakeholders, Michelle Mitchell OBE, the chief executive of Cancer Research UK, expressed gratitude to supporters, volunteers, and staff for their contributions to cancer research. The charity emphasized the need for restructuring to ensure sustainability and continued support for those affected by the changes.

The decision to streamline operations and focus on high-performing outlets aims to increase funding for cancer research and improve services for stakeholders. Cancer Research UK remains committed to transparency and support throughout the transition process.
