“Stratus COVID Variant on the Rise, Symptoms Mimic Common Illnesses”

Cases of the Stratus variant of COVID-19 are increasing, with symptoms that can be easily mistaken for common illnesses. Alongside the Nimbus strain, Stratus is highly transmissible but not necessarily more severe than previous strains.

Stratus, identified in January, has two variants, XFG and XFG.3, with XFG being the most prevalent in the UK according to the World Health Organization. Symptoms of Stratus, such as headaches, coughing, nasal congestion, fatigue, and specific indicators like a hoarse voice or throat discomfort, resemble those of other strains.

Patients have reported body aches, a symptom that can be confused with flu. Dr. Gareth Nye from the University of Salford noted that Stratus may cause more severe symptoms, including sore throats and hoarseness, compared to earlier strains.

Health experts recommend continued vaccination against the latest strains, as the new variants may evade immunity from previous infections, reducing the effectiveness of prior vaccines. The Royal College of GPs disclosed a doubling of COVID-19 infections in the past four weeks, underscoring the importance of following health guidelines and staying home if symptomatic.

While most symptomatic individuals may not require COVID-19 testing, those testing positive should isolate for three days if under 18 and five days if 18 or older. The NHS advises avoiding contact with vulnerable individuals for 10 days post-test. Flu-like symptoms can manifest rapidly and include various signs, such as body aches.
