Sir AP McCoy has shared his advice on the future of Constitution Hill, a promising jumps horse. Constitution Hill, the victor of the 2023 Champion Hurdle, had an impressive record of ten consecutive wins before encountering setbacks at the Cheltenham Festival and subsequent races.
Despite high expectations, Constitution Hill faced disappointment with early exits in key races, including the Grand National meeting at Aintree and the Punchestown Champion Hurdle. Trainer Nicky Henderson conducted a thorough evaluation of the horse over the summer to prepare for the Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle.
Unfortunately, Constitution Hill’s misfortune continued as he fell during the race at Newcastle, indicating ongoing challenges with his jumping. While retirement has been ruled out by Henderson, the possibility of transitioning Constitution Hill to flat racing is being considered.
In a recent episode of William Hill’s Inside Track, McCoy expressed his perspective on Constitution Hill’s situation, highlighting the dilemma of persisting with hurdles despite recurring falls. Barry Geraghty, another William Hill ambassador and original purchaser of Constitution Hill, suggested exploring alternative training methods to address the jumping issues before making a decision on the horse’s future direction.
The differing opinions of McCoy and Geraghty underscore the complexity of the situation, with both emphasizing the need for careful consideration and innovative approaches to maximize Constitution Hill’s potential in the sport.
