Liz Hubbuck’s life may seem idyllic at first glance, with a beautiful home, two sons, supportive friends, and a fulfilling job aiding young people. However, her seemingly normal life is a result of her unwavering determination and resilience, as she was a victim of child grooming starting at the age of 13 by her school bus driver.
Over a two-year period, Liz was emotionally and physically manipulated by the man known as Andy Robinson. He coerced her into degrading acts to prove her love for him and engaged in role-playing scenarios that were deeply disturbing. Robinson insidiously infiltrated every aspect of her life, even moving into her family home.
The trauma inflicted by her abuser extended to the cruel death of her beloved guinea pig, Cookie, whose memory still haunts her. Despite the loss of innocence, confidence, and relationships, Liz refused to be defined by her past. Now, at 45, she resides in Hampshire, sharing her harrowing journey in a new book titled “Hear Me” to offer hope to other victims of child grooming and abuse.
Growing up in the 1980s in a modest household with her single mother and brother, Liz faced financial struggles and neglect, making her an easy target for predatory individuals. Robinson, with his charm and manipulation, exploited Liz’s vulnerabilities, gradually isolating her from her support system and subjecting her to abuse.
Through sheer determination and resilience, Liz emerged from the shadows of her past, working as a youth engagement manager and safeguarding lead for the police, advocating for survivors of child sexual abuse. She emphasizes the importance of support and resilience in overcoming adversity, aiming to inspire others who have faced similar challenges.
Liz’s story sheds light on the prevalence of child grooming and sexual abuse, urging for more awareness and preventive measures against predators. Despite the betrayal and hardships she endured, Liz has forgiven her mother, recognizing her as another victim of grooming. She continues to advocate for victims’ rights and emphasizes the need for collective action to combat sexual abuse.
For those affected by grooming or abuse, support is available through organizations like Rape Crisis. Liz’s book, “Hear Me,” offers a poignant account of resilience and survival, available for purchase to raise awareness and empower survivors to reclaim their lives.
