Family Honors “Wonderful Gentleman” Killed in M5 Crash

The grieving family of a victim from a tragic M5 crash has honored the memory of their beloved one, described as a “wonderful gentleman,” in a touching tribute released for the first time.

Mihai Florescu, a 39-year-old resident of Plymouth, tragically lost his life in a fatal four-vehicle collision in Devon on September 18. His devastated family, led by his wife Laura, expressed profound sorrow at the untimely passing of Mihai, emphasizing his role as a cherished husband, son, brother, and friend who departed too soon.

The collision involved a Volkswagen Transporter, a Land Rover Discovery, a Kia Creed, and Mihai’s Toyota Prius. The driver of the Transporter, a man in his 40s, was apprehended on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving but has been released pending further investigation.

Following the incident, the M5 was temporarily shut down in both directions, causing significant traffic disruptions. Another three-vehicle crash near Junction 28 earlier that night left a driver in his 60s with severe injuries, prompting the intervention of National Highways to address the central reservation barrier damage.

Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed the road closures due to the dual collisions and expressed gratitude for the public’s patience during the recovery and investigative efforts. Superintendent Joe Mathews acknowledged the challenges faced in managing the incidents and extended sympathies to the injured parties and the deceased’s family and friends. Emergency services were commended for their dedicated work at the complex accident scenes.
