Russian hackers are being investigated for allegedly stealing and posting sensitive military documents on the dark web. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) confirmed they are actively looking into the matter and emphasized their proactive stance against cyber threats.
The stolen files reportedly include information on eight RAF and Royal Navy bases, along with MoD staff names and emails. The breach is said to have occurred through a third-party contractor, the Dodd Group, in September. Hackers issued warnings to the contractor, urging them to address the situation promptly.
Among the leaked documents are details about strategic Navy and RAF bases like RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk, where the US Air Force’s F-35 stealth jets are stationed. The MoD spokesperson stressed their commitment to safeguarding national interests against cyber threats and refrained from disclosing further details on the ongoing investigation.
This incident adds to a series of data breaches at the MoD, including a significant hack last year that exposed personal data of service personnel and veterans. The Government also established the Afghanistan Response Route to assist individuals in Afghanistan affected by a data leak earlier this year.
