Zipcar, a car rental company, has revealed its intention to shut down its operations in the United Kingdom by the end of this year. The UK general manager, James Taylor, informed customers via email that discussions are in progress, and bookings have been temporarily halted beyond December 31. Taylor stated that Zipcar is initiating formal consultations with its UK employees and proposing to discontinue operations in the UK.
Customers who have already reserved a car for the Christmas period will still be able to proceed with their bookings. However, those who have booked a vehicle for the New Year will be contacted by the company. Members with reservations after December 31 will receive a refund without any cancellation fees.
According to Taylor, Zipcar’s UK operations will remain open until a final decision is reached after the consultation process. Zipcar, an American company, provides hourly and longer-term rentals for cars and vans through a mobile application, offering three membership options with varying costs.
The reason behind the sudden closure of Zipcar’s UK operations was not disclosed. While operations in the US will continue without any closures, customers seeking to use Zipcar in the US will require a US membership.
As of the end of last year, the UK operations of Zipcar employed 71 individuals, according to the company’s latest financial statements. The company reported deepening losses to £5.7 million in 2024 due to a decline in customer trips.
In its October financial report, Zipcar cited increased cost pressures throughout the year, including rising electricity and insurance costs, as well as market volatility. The company highlighted a significant increase in pre-tax losses compared to the previous year, attributing it to reduced revenue from fewer trips and shorter durations, influenced by economic challenges impacting consumer spending.
