If you own a smartphone, chances are you are part of multiple WhatsApp groups. Whether you are using an iPhone or an Android device, the popular cross-platform messaging application allows you to communicate through text, photos, videos, and voice notes with various individuals in a single chat.
From childhood pals to parent communities to work-related discussions, there seems to be a WhatsApp group for almost everything these days. However, staying updated with ongoing conversations can be challenging if you join a group midway through a discussion or get added to a well-established group.
To address this modern issue, WhatsApp is introducing a new feature called Group Message History. With this feature, when a new member is added to a WhatsApp group, there is an option to share the previous 25, 50, 75, or 100 messages with that individual. This allows the newcomer to quickly catch up on the latest discussions and understand the ongoing conversation.
In a blog post, WhatsApp stated, “We are thrilled to introduce Group Message History, enhancing group chats by providing seamless integration for new members.” This new tool, which is gradually rolling out globally, is one of the most requested features by WhatsApp users. WhatsApp ensured that Group Message History, like all personal messages, remains end-to-end encrypted, offering a faster and more private way to maintain conversations without the need for screenshots or unnecessary message forwarding. This feature enables new members to focus on the most recent and relevant context, while allowing the entire group to easily access shared messages.
When adding a new member to a group, you may need to share message history if the feature is enabled. Group admins have the authority to disable this setting for a group chat. However, admins can always choose to share message history, even if regular group members are restricted from doing so through a settings modification.
WhatsApp clarified, “When message history is shared, all group members are notified with clear timestamps and sender information, distinguishing message history from regular messages.”
To check if you have access to this new feature, review your WhatsApp app today. If not available, visit the Apple App Store or Google Play Store to check for any available updates. If the feature is not visible yet, expect it to appear in the coming weeks.
