“Twisted Confession: Killer Describes Gruesome Act”

A man named Jay Katz has shared details about the day he fatally shot his father and stepmother. During an interview on Mark Laita’s YouTube channel, Soft White Underbelly, Katz disclosed that he drew inspiration from a crime thriller before committing the gruesome act in 1991 at their residence in Burtonsville, Maryland.

Identified as Jayant Narayan Katz, the killer brutally murdered his father, Norman, and stepmother, Michelle R. Filling-Katz. In a disturbing confession tape, he described the killings as “amazing” and expressed his enjoyment of the thrill involved, comparing it to a game of cat and mouse. According to court records, Katz’s mother revealed that he had been diagnosed with manic depression, a condition characterized by extreme mood swings.

After serving 23 years in prison for two counts of second-degree murder and two handgun offenses, Katz was released in 2022. Reflecting on the tragic incident that occurred in August 1991, Katz confessed to feeling suicidal on that fateful day.

At the time of the murders, Katz, then 20 years old, was contemplating suicide in his parents’ home when his father, former US Army doctor Norman N. Katz, invited him to watch a popular Wesley Snipes movie, “New Jack City.” Katz mentioned that although the film wasn’t solely responsible, certain aspects planted ideas of vigilante justice in his mind.

In a harrowing account, Katz alleged that he had been a victim of childhood sexual abuse, although this claim was never substantiated during legal proceedings. He admitted to taking his stepmother’s revolver and shooting her as she cooked in the kitchen, followed by fatally shooting his father as he sat on the couch watching a movie. Katz callously recalled observing them bleed out without any emotional response.

Upon discovering the gruesome scene, Katz’s younger brother, Sanjeev, alerted the authorities, expressing his belief that Jay Katz was behind the heinous act. Sanjeev informed the police that Katz had repeatedly voiced intentions to kill their parents and had discussed using their stepmother’s gun for the crime.

Family friends attested that Norman and Michelle Katz had expressed concerns about their son’s behavior, although his mental health issues were not deemed severe. Katz later pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder and two handgun offenses in Montgomery County.

Offered a plea deal amounting to 100 years in prison, Katz struggled with the decision, eventually accepting the terms. Reflecting on his actions, he described pulling the trigger as horrific but signing for a century behind bars as the most challenging choice he had ever faced. After serving his sentence, Katz was finally released in March 2022, marking the end of his 23-year incarceration.
