“Tragic Accident: Michigan Mother Killed by Stingray Leap”

A tragic incident unfolded during a family vacation as a mother of two lost her life in a bizarre accident involving a large stingray. Judy Kay Zagorski, a 57-year-old from Michigan, was on a boat outing in the Florida Keys when the unexpected tragedy occurred.

The event occurred near Marathon on Vaca Key’s Atlantic Ocean side in the spring of 2008. Judy was seated at the front of the boat, cruising at approximately 25 mph, when a 75-pound spotted eagle ray, boasting a wingspan of around six feet, suddenly leaped out of the water and collided with her face. The impact threw her backwards onto the boat’s floor.

Authorities noted that there were no signs of puncture wounds from the ray’s venomous barbs on Judy. The sheer force of the collision proved to be fatal in itself.

The medical examiner for Monroe County confirmed that Judy succumbed instantly to blunt force trauma, suffering multiple skull fractures and direct brain injury. She did not sustain any stings.

Judy’s sister, Joyce Ann Miller, who was standing beside her, escaped unscathed. Their father, Virgil Bouck, was operating the boat at the time, with their mother, Verneta, also present as the family enjoyed their spring holiday together.

Following the tragic incident, the ray was also found deceased in the boat. Wildlife officials categorized it as a freak accident, as spotted eagle rays are typically not aggressive and only use their venomous tail barbs in self-defense.

Spotted eagle rays can reach weights of up to 500 pounds and have wingspans as wide as ten feet. They are protected under Florida law and are usually peaceful swimmers near the ocean’s surface.

The community, as well as visitors, were left stunned by Judy’s untimely death. Her brother, Dan Bouck, described her as an exceptional sister who volunteered with terminally ill patients and managed Beadle Bay Marina and Campground with her late husband, Steve Zagorski.

Experts highlight the extreme rarity of such accidents. While there have been occasional incidents involving rays landing in boats, fatalities are seldom reported.

This case has drawn parallels to other notable accidents involving marine creatures, such as the tragic death of Steve Irwin in Australia.
