Top jockey Clifford Lee out of coma after accident

Top jockey Clifford Lee has awakened from an induced coma following a motorcycle accident during his vacation. The 29-year-old sustained a neck fracture after falling headfirst and was swiftly taken to the hospital last week. Despite having enjoyed a successful year with 94 wins, Lee will face an extended absence from racing, as confirmed by his employer Karl Burke.

Burke expressed relief that Lee is now out of the coma, highlighting the upcoming operation to address the fractures. He remains optimistic about Lee’s strength and recovery prospects post-surgery. Notably, in August, Lee achieved a milestone in his racing career by clinching the Prix Morny at Deauville with Venetian Sun.

Additionally, Lee secured significant victories this summer aboard horses like Royal Champion, Al Qareem, and Convergent. His recent suspension coincided with a holiday trip to Greece followed by a visit to Scotland with his family, where the unfortunate accident occurred.

Burke, surprised by Lee’s motorbike hobby, learned of the incident on a Sunday morning and acknowledged the severity of the situation while recognizing it could have been more catastrophic. Lee’s horses garnered a total of £2.3 million in Britain in 2025, with Al Qareem contributing significantly to the earnings.

Despite not hailing from a racing background, Lee, originally from south-east London, has showcased exceptional talent and strategic prowess in his victories, notably in the Cambridgeshire races. As Lee continues his recovery in an Edinburgh hospital, fans have flooded him with messages of support and well wishes for a swift return to form.
