Rybakina Snubs WTA CEO After Finals Win

Elena Rybakina faced backlash from tennis legend Pam Shriver for refusing to take a photo with WTA CEO Portia Archer after claiming victory at the WTA Finals in Saudi Arabia. The Kazakhstani player, who won a £4 million prize, celebrated her significant triumph by defeating world No.1 Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets.

Rybakina’s decision not to pose with Archer was seen as a protest against the suspension of her coach, Stefano Vukov, for breaching the WTA’s code of conduct. Vukov, who assisted Rybakina to a Wimbledon title, had previously been banned from official roles at tournaments but later had his suspension overturned after an appeal.

Despite the controversy, Rybakina expressed her satisfaction with Vukov’s return, denying any mistreatment and stating they never had any issues. Shriver criticized Rybakina on social media for snubbing Archer, emphasizing the need to address abuse and manipulation in tennis.

During a press conference, Rybakina avoided elaborating on her decision not to stand with Archer but criticized the WTA for poor communication regarding the Vukov situation. She praised her unexpected victory and acknowledged the tough competition she faced.

Meanwhile, Aryna Sabalenka, who had a notable season with achievements at major tournaments, including the US Open, expressed disappointment at her Finals defeat, acknowledging Rybakina’s superior performance. Sabalenka reflected on her emotional state and recognized her opponent’s dominance on the court.
