A plea agreement is in the final stages for Bella Culley, a British 19-year-old facing drug smuggling charges in Georgia. Bella, who is six months pregnant, has been held in custody after being accused of bringing drugs into the country earlier this year. The court in Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, has been informed that the details of the deal are being ironed out. A hearing last month revealed that Bella could potentially avoid jail time by paying an undisclosed fine as part of the agreement. The amount of the fine will determine the outcome of the case, with the possibility of her release depending on the sum paid.
During a recent court session at Tbilisi City Court, Judge Giorgi Gelashvili inquired about the progress of the plea agreement. Bella’s defense attorney, Malkhaz Salakaia, mentioned ongoing discussions with Bella’s family to reach a decision. The prosecutor, Zaza Koridze, confirmed that the finalization of the details is underway, leading to a postponement of the hearing to the next scheduled date on October 28. Following the session, attended by Bella’s mother and grandmother, Salakaia informed the press that negotiations were nearing completion but required additional time to meet the agreement’s terms.
Salakaia emphasized that Bella’s father was diligently working to gather the necessary funds for the plea deal. He clarified that the total amount raised by the family would determine Bella’s potential release from custody. The lawyer explained that Bella’s non-Georgian citizenship and pregnancy increased the likelihood of her release. Regarding the timeline for resolving the case, Salakaia mentioned the upcoming review on November 2, indicating a possible extension if the funds were not ready by then.
Bella, originally from Billingham, Teesside, went missing in Thailand before being apprehended in Georgia in May with narcotics in her possession. Despite her claims of being coerced and her clean drug test, Bella expressed her desire to clear her name and make her family proud during a court appearance in July. Subsequent court proceedings revealed that Bella is expecting a baby boy. In her statements to the judge, she shared her disbelief at the unfolding events and hoped for understanding of her situation.
