Tennis icon Novak Djokovic has raised concerns about the controversy surrounding Jannik Sinner’s doping incident and subsequent suspension earlier this year. The Italian player accepted a three-month ban following two positive drug tests in 2024.
Initially, Sinner escaped punishment as a panel determined that the positive tests for clostebol, an anabolic steroid, were due to contamination during a massage by his fitness coach. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) concluded that Sinner was not at fault for the findings in March 2024.
In response to criticism, the ITIA defended its handling of Sinner’s case last year and refuted claims of favoritism. Sinner later reached a settlement with the World Anti-Doping Agency, which had contested the initial decision not to suspend him.
The current world No. 2 served his suspension from February to May this year, allowing him to participate in the French Open in late May. Djokovic, who lost to Sinner in the semi-finals of the French Open and Wimbledon, shared his thoughts on the matter during a recent conversation with Piers Morgan.
Expressing his surprise at the situation, Djokovic emphasized his belief that Sinner did not intentionally cheat. However, he criticized the handling of the case, citing concerns over transparency, timing of the ban, and perceived preferential treatment.
Djokovic also addressed his own controversial stance on Covid-19 vaccination, clarifying that he advocates for freedom of choice rather than taking a pro or anti-vaccine position.
In a separate development, Sky has discounted its Essential TV and Sky Sports package for the upcoming season, offering substantial savings and an expanded lineup of live matches across various leagues, including the Premier League. Sky will broadcast over 215 Premier League games next season, a notable increase from previous seasons.
