Serving Metropolitan Police officers have been exposed in secret recordings advocating for the shooting of illegal immigrants suspected of crimes and making inappropriate comments, including jokes about rape. The recordings also captured instances of crude sexual remarks, racist views, and dismissive attitudes towards serious allegations within the force.
The behavior disclosed by Panorama, as highlighted by Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley, was described as “disgraceful, totally unacceptable and contrary to the values and standards” of the police. The undercover investigative report revealed disturbing conversations where officers made violent and derogatory remarks towards detainees and displayed discriminatory behavior towards immigrants and Muslims.
One officer was recorded suggesting violence towards an immigrant detainee and making derogatory comments about women. Another officer was dismissive of a pregnant woman’s allegations of rape and domestic violence. Additionally, various officers were caught making racist comments and engaging in inappropriate conversations, including discussing sexual activities in a custody setting.
Following the revelations, nine officers have been suspended, and a significant investigation by the police watchdog has been initiated to address the misconduct. The allegations, which also include claims of excessive force against suspects, have raised concerns about the safety of individuals in police custody.
The scandal has led to the resignation of former commissioner Dame Cressida Dick, with the current Met boss expressing regret over the behavior exhibited by the officers. London Mayor Sadiq Khan has voiced support for the efforts to remove wrongdoers from the police force and emphasized the need for zero tolerance towards misconduct.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is conducting its own inquiry into the allegations, with several officers under investigation for potential gross misconduct and criminal offenses. The incidents reportedly occurred between August 2024 and January 2025, resulting in the disbandment of the entire custody team at Charing Cross police station.
In response to the scandal, the Met is implementing rigorous measures to tackle misconduct, including swift disciplinary actions against officers involved in racism, misogyny, and unethical behavior. Efforts are being made to enhance transparency and accountability within the force to restore public trust and confidence in the police service.
