Man Avoids Jail for Racially Motivated Harassment

A man who terrorized his neighbors with racially motivated harassment, criminal damage, and rape threats narrowly avoided jail time. Sarbjit Hundal, aged 53, unleashed a wave of racial abuse towards his neighboring family, including destructive behavior like breaking windows and tearing down their garden fence without any provocation.

Despite a previous conviction for racially abusing the same neighbors in August 2023, Hundal’s latest harassment spree began in December 2024 and persisted until May of the following year. He even went as far as threatening to sexually assault two of the women residing in the neighboring property.

Despite being arrested and warned not to contact his neighbors, Hundal’s aggressive conduct towards them resumed shortly after his release. Facing charges for various offenses including assault, racially aggravated harassment, and assaulting an emergency worker, Hundal also directed racial slurs at the arresting officers.

Initially denying some of the charges, Hundal eventually pleaded guilty in July, moments before his trial was set to commence. During his court appearance on September 18, the prosecutor, Rajni Prashar, highlighted Hundal’s persistent harassment of the family despite being under bail conditions prohibiting contact.

An incident on December 20, where Hundal verbally abused the homeowner’s daughter and physically damaged property, was brought to light during the court proceedings. The prosecution revealed details of Hundal’s aggressive behavior, including threats and racial epithets hurled at the family and law enforcement officers.

Hundal’s disruptive behavior extended beyond verbal abuse and property damage, as he continued to intimidate the family even after being released on bail. The court learned of his repeated breaches of bail conditions, causing fear and anxiety among the neighbors. The victim impact statement outlined the traumatizing effects of Hundal’s actions, leading the family to live in constant apprehension.

In addition to his recent offenses, Hundal had prior convictions for various crimes, including racially aggravated offenses. Despite claiming a dispute over a tree as the root cause of the conflict with the neighbors, magistrates condemned his actions as despicable and emphasized the family’s right to safety and peace in their home.

As a consequence of his behavior, Hundal received a 20-week prison sentence, suspended for 18 months, for the December offenses. He was also handed a six-week jail term, also suspended, for the harassment campaign. The court mandated Hundal to engage in probation, undergo rehabilitation sessions, and attend mental health treatment as part of his sentence.

Furthermore, Hundal was ordered to pay compensation to the homeowner and the officers he mistreated, in addition to receiving a three-year restraining order prohibiting contact with the family or damage to their property. Despite claiming financial constraints, Hundal committed to monthly payments towards the compensation owed.
