“Keir Starmer Urged to Act for UK Citizen Detained in India”

Keir Starmer has emphasized that the British government has not overlooked Jagtar Singh Johal, a UK citizen imprisoned in India for nearly eight years.

The Prime Minister’s remarks came as Gurpreet, Jagtar’s brother, urged Starmer to take a firm stance before crucial discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Mumbai. Jagtar, a 38-year-old Sikh activist from Dumbarton near Glasgow, was arrested in India in November 2017 shortly after his wedding.

Although acquitted in one case earlier this year, Jagtar still faces charges from Indian authorities related to terrorism. He has alleged being subjected to torture, and the UN panel recognized his detention as arbitrary in 2022.

In response to queries about Jagtar, the PM affirmed, “Not at all. When I met with Prime Minister Modi in July, Jagtar’s case was discussed. The Foreign Secretary has been engaging with his family members. We consistently address consular cases at all levels.”

Earlier this week, Gurpreet, Jagtar’s brother, stated, “In eight years, no evidence has been presented, making the Prime Minister the most suitable person to strongly advocate for Jagtar’s release.”

He continued, “The Indian authorities continue to prolong his detention, and if they have failed to produce evidence in eight years, it is unlikely they will do so now. Keir Starmer should declare ‘enough is enough’ and bring Jagtar back home.”

A spokesperson from the Foreign Office mentioned, “We persistently raise concerns about Mr. Johal’s prolonged detention with the Indian government at every opportunity. The Foreign Secretary is set to meet with Mr. Johal’s brother shortly to discuss the ongoing situation.”
