Europe’s quirkiest museum, the Icelandic Phallological Museum in Reykjavik, known for its extensive collection of over 300 penises and penile parts, has been voted as the top eccentric museum by amused Brits in a recent easyJet poll. Garnering a significant 25% of the public vote, the Icelandic museum surpassed the Sewer Museum in Paris, which secured the second position with 19%. Other notable mentions in the top 20 list included the Museum of Broken Relationships in Zagreb, Croatia, and the Torture Museum in Amsterdam.
Among the unconventional museums that captured the attention of Brits were Froggyland in Split featuring 507 stuffed frogs, the Museum of Miniatures in Prague, and the Surgeon’s Hall Museum in Edinburgh, all ranking impressively.
According to a study involving 2,000 Brits conducted by easyJet, there has been a surge in the interest for unique cultural experiences, with 88% expressing a desire for a distinctive cultural city break. This trend has led to 79% of Brits intentionally planning trips to explore peculiar cultural attractions such as quirky museums and art galleries.
A significant 22% of vacationers prefer exploring offbeat locations during city breaks, with 84% willing to invest more for extraordinary cultural experiences. Additionally, 81% of respondents revealed that visiting one of the museums listed by easyJet is on their travel bucket list.
Interestingly, one-third of Brits find visiting unusual museums more enjoyable than visiting traditional landmarks. Particularly, 80% of Gen Z Brits expressed a higher likelihood of visiting a quirky museum if they had seen it on social media platforms like Instagram or TikTok.
Kevin Doyle, the UK Country Manager at easyJet, emphasized the appeal of autumn for cultural city breaks, highlighting the increased demand for unique travel experiences. With more than 550 routes across over 30 countries from 22 UK airports, including new winter destinations like Vienna, Grenoble, and Rovaniemi, easyJet aims to provide customers with enhanced connectivity, options, and value for exploring Europe this autumn.
