“Government Plans Crackdown on Unlicensed Vape Sales”

The government is planning to restrict the sale of vapes and cigarettes to only licensed shops in an effort to crack down on unauthorized vendors. Ministerial discussions are underway regarding the regulation of vape flavors and ingredients to deter youth initiation. Currently, any establishment can sell tobacco and vaping products, leading to the easy availability of illicit goods to minors.

Health Minister Stephen Kinnock emphasized the need for shops to obtain licenses to sell tobacco, vapes, and nicotine items to address regulatory gaps and protect children from unscrupulous traders. The proposed measures aim to eliminate rogue retailers from high streets and inform consumers about reputable vendors.

Additionally, the government is consulting experts on vape flavors, nicotine levels, and product appearance as part of the Tobacco and Vapes Bill, which aims to create a generation free from smoking habits and prevent youth addiction. Vendors found selling products without proper licensing may face substantial fines or immediate penalties.

Recent research by King’s College London and University College London suggests that implementing plain packaging for vapes could reduce underage vaping rates. The study revealed that displaying branded packaging and flavors increased interest among young individuals, whereas plain packaging with flavor descriptions lowered appeal.
