“Gen Z Singles Find Dating Apps Superficial, Embrace Ghostly Romance”

A recent survey indicates that seven out of 10 single individuals from Generation Z believe that dating apps have transformed modern romance into a superficial activity centered around swiping, making it challenging to find a compatible partner. Researchers interviewed 1,000 adults who have used dating apps in the last five years, with 22 percent of Gen Z participants expressing that these apps are detrimental. Over half of them feel that the experience resembles a game rather than a sincere quest for meaningful connections. Only a third of users reported encountering “nice” people, while 40 percent described their matches as either “mean” or “weird.”

Interestingly, Generation Z appears to prioritize personality over appearance, with just 27 percent considering looks as the most crucial aspect of a dating profile, in comparison to 36 percent of Millennials, Gen X, and Baby Boomers.

The study, arranged by innovative wine brand 19 Crimes, coincides with the launch of a Halloween-themed alternative to traditional dating apps. Collaborating with celebrity psychic medium Sam O’Brien, they are offering singles the opportunity to break away from conventional dating norms and apps for an evening of eerie romance called ‘Read and Buried,’ where participants might end up dating a ghost. Sam, renowned for reading the fortunes of celebrities like Rylan, Tess Daly, and Kylie Minogue, will match attendees with some spectral companions.

Sam expressed, “Modern dating can often feel devoid of emotions, so why not introduce some actual souls into the mix? Whether one has been ghosted before or is simply curious about the paranormal, Read and Buried offers a chance to challenge dating conventions, enjoy a unique experience, and possibly establish a supernatural connection.”

The survey findings also highlighted the major turn-offs on dating platforms, including having excessive demands, displaying arrogance, and using heavily filtered or edited photos. On average, respondents confessed to being ghosted seven times post-date, while admitting to ghosting others five times themselves. Additionally, one-fifth of participants reported being ‘catfished,’ a statistic only 7 percent lower than those who believed they had formed genuine connections via dating apps.

Regarding meeting potential partners, nearly half of respondents expressed a preference for spontaneous encounters at social gatherings, with introductions through mutual friends or shared interests also proving popular. Younger generations, particularly 71 percent of Gen Z and 68 percent of Millennials, are open to exploring unconventional in-person dating events.

Chantal McDowell of 19 Crimes, which has unveiled a limited-edition range of glow-in-the-dark Halloween-themed wine bottles featuring characters like Frankenstein and The Mummy, stated, “Our research indicates that contemporary dating methods are not universally effective. With Read and Buried, we invite singles to step away from apps, embrace the unexpected, and indulge in a bit of rebellious fun. What better way to meet someone this Halloween, whether living or otherwise, than over a glass of wine.”
