“Gen Z Protests Sweep Morocco Over Stadium vs. Public Welfare”

In Morocco, a massive football stadium construction project has sparked protests led by Gen Z activists who criticize government priorities as being driven by greed.

The upcoming football stadium with a capacity of 115,000 seats, part of a $5 billion (£3.7bn) investment in football infrastructure, has triggered nightly demonstrations by young protestors since September 27.

Identified as Gen Z 212 (referencing Morocco’s dialing code), the movement has utilized social media platforms like Discord, TikTok, and Instagram to coordinate their calls for improved healthcare, free education, and higher wages.

Morocco, with a significant youth population, witnessed the Gen Z protests driven by discontent similar to youth movements in other countries like Nepal focusing on issues of limited opportunities, corruption, and favoritism.

The peaceful protests by Gen Z 212 have spread across ten cities, including Rabat, Tangiers, and Casablanca. Protester Hajar Belhassan, aged 25, expressed a desire for a better country without having to leave, emphasizing the importance of staying and striving for positive change.

Protesters in Morocco demand a shift in government focus towards essential infrastructure and public welfare, echoing slogans such as “No World Cup, health comes first” and “We want hospitals not football stadiums.”

The movement’s statement called for government resignation, highlighting the necessity of fundamental rights like healthcare, education, and decent living conditions that should not need to be demanded in the first place.

The protests have faced harsh responses from authorities, including mass arrests and violence, leading to casualties among demonstrators. The Mirror has reached out to the Moroccan Gendarmerie Royale for comments on the situation.

Gen Z 212, originating on Discord in mid-September, rapidly grew from 3,000 to over 130,000 members within a week, showcasing the power of online platforms in mobilizing youth movements for social causes.

Unlike traditional structures, Morocco’s Gen Z 212 movement remains decentralized and unaffiliated with political parties, emphasizing a grassroots and independent approach to their activism.
