Andrea de Adamich, a former Formula 1 driver who raced for McLaren and Ferrari, has passed away at the age of 84. He participated in 34 World Championship Grand Prix events during his career. De Adamich’s time in F1 came to an end after a serious 10-car crash during the 1973 British Grand Prix at Silverstone, where he sustained a broken ankle and other leg injuries.
Following his retirement from racing, De Adamich transitioned into a successful broadcasting career, becoming a beloved commentator and TV expert known for his insightful analysis. He hosted the television show Grand Prix on Italia 1 from 1978 to 2012. In recognition of his contributions, he was appointed Commendatore of the Order of Merit in 2022, a prestigious honor in Italy.
Born in Trieste, De Adamich began his racing journey by winning the Italian Formula 3 title in 1965 before moving on to Alfa Romeo. He achieved success in the European Touring Car Championship in 1966 and 1967, later joining Ferrari in 1968. Throughout his career, he also competed for March, Surtees, and Brabham, excelling in endurance racing alongside notable figures like Piers Courage, Henri Pescarolo, and others.
De Adamich’s achievements included victories at the 200 Miles of Buenos Aires in 1970, the 1000 KM of Brands Hatch in England, and the Six Hours of Watkins Glen in the United States in 1971. In his final season in 1974, he achieved podium finishes at all four 1000km races he entered. Additionally, he participated in the Le Mans race twice, finishing fourth in 1972.
Despite his racing successes, De Adamich’s work in television garnered significant praise, with tributes pouring in following his passing. Fans and colleagues alike remembered him for his professionalism, passion, and contribution to the world of motorsport.
