Europe has received a strong warning to safeguard its airspace amid a rise in threats described as “hybrid warfare” by a top EU official. The caution comes in the wake of a series of unidentified drone infiltrations into European Union airspace, causing alarm among the public and politicians, with some pointing fingers at Russia. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the EU Commission, emphasized the need for urgent action during a speech at the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
Addressing the issue, von der Leyen stated, “The recent airspace intrusions are part of a concerning trend. We must acknowledge it for what it is – hybrid warfare.” She stressed the importance of Europe enhancing its capabilities to defend against such threats. While not explicitly blaming Russia for all incidents, she highlighted Russia’s intent to create discord and emphasized the necessity for a unified response.
Von der Leyen emphasized that countering Russia’s hybrid warfare goes beyond traditional defense strategies, requiring a collective shift in mindset. She presented a choice between passivity in the face of escalating threats from Russia or a united front with determination and deterrence.
Recent weeks have seen heightened vigilance in Europe following suspected Russian drone intrusions that led to the closure of airports and disruption of flights. Incidents included the entry of nearly two dozen UAVs into Poland’s airspace on September 10, prompting NATO aircraft to intervene. Additional sightings of drones were reported across several Northern European countries, with NATO jets escorting Russian warplanes out of Estonia’s airspace in a separate incident.
Despite continuous denials from Moscow, concerns mounted when a Russian tanker suspected of facilitating drone operations was apprehended by French authorities. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen linked the drones to Russia and advocated for a robust response. The recent drone sightings at Munich airport resulted in flight cancellations and diversions, leaving thousands of passengers stranded. Calls for more decisive actions, such as potentially shooting down drones, have been voiced by politicians.
European governments suspect that Russia is testing NATO’s defense capabilities, with drones possibly being launched from tankers at sea to evade Western sanctions. The situation underscores the need for enhanced security measures and a coordinated approach to counter emerging threats in European airspace.
