Police have provided an update on the individuals harmed in the vehicle attack and stabbing incident at a synagogue in Manchester. Tragically, two individuals lost their lives, and authorities have disclosed that an additional four individuals are currently hospitalized. Greater Manchester Police stated, “Four further people remain in hospital, having sustained various severe injuries, and their medical care is ongoing. Our thoughts are with them during this time.”
The assault at a Manchester synagogue earlier today involved armed police fatally shooting the suspect who had driven a car into pedestrians and stabbed an individual on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. Greater Manchester Police confirmed the death of two individuals in the attack outside Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue on Middleton Road in Crumpsall.
In an afternoon statement, Chief Constable Sir Stephen Watson revealed that four individuals were hospitalized following the incident, which has been officially classified as a terrorist act. He mentioned that the authorities believe they have identified the perpetrator and that two other individuals have been arrested in connection with the attack, with ongoing investigations.
Sir Stephen expressed, “We can confirm that two members of our Jewish community have sadly died as a result of this attack. Following a prompt response, armed officers from Greater Manchester Police confronted the perpetrator, resulting in his fatal shooting within seven minutes of the initial alert. Four more individuals are in hospital, having sustained various serious injuries, and our thoughts are with them.”
He continued, “Investigations are progressing swiftly, with visible and proactive policing efforts underway in Greater Manchester and beyond. Updates will be shared promptly, as our primary focus is public safety.”
The vicinity of the synagogue was inundated with numerous police vehicles, fire trucks, and ambulances, while a police helicopter circled overhead shortly after the incident outside Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in Crumpsall. A bomb disposal unit was dispatched to the scene following social media footage suggesting that the suspect might have had an explosive device.
The individual who was shot by armed police at 9:38 am was observed wearing what appeared to be a ‘bomb belt.’
