Grieving Parents’ MDMA Warning for Students

The grieving parents of a student have issued a heartfelt cautionary message following his fatal reaction to a single dose of MDMA.

Nathan Pavlovic, aged 21, fell ill after consuming the Class A substance in October 2020. Sadly, Nathan, a third-year forensic computing student at Northumbria University, passed away shortly after.

As countless students kick off the new academic year, Nathan’s parents, Alex and Beth, have shared a heartfelt plea about the risks associated with drug use. They highlighted the tragic incident to alert students about the perils of experimenting with illicit substances. Their warning coincides with the return of students to universities and colleges nationwide.

Beth emphasized, “The dangers of taking such substances cannot be overstated. We recognize that young individuals may succumb to peer pressure in certain situations and engage in activities they know are unsafe.”

“But it is crucial to trust your instincts and reconsider before consuming illegal drugs. Nathan’s fatal experience with MDMA was a stark reminder of the consequences.”

She continued, “Nathan had a promising future ahead of him, with so much to anticipate in life. All of that has been abruptly taken away from him and us.”

Investigations by Northumbria Police revealed that Kasam Ali supplied the drugs to George Harle, who then shared them with Nathan, from Halifax, W. Yorks, in October 2020. Ali, 35, from Croydon Road, Newcastle, admitted to possessing MDMA, cocaine, ketamine, and cannabis with intent to distribute. Harle, 25, residing on Shield Street, also in Newcastle, confessed to supplying MDMA.

Nathan’s father, Alex, expressed, “There is an irreplaceable void in our existence due to Nathan’s absence. To anyone contemplating drug use, I urge you to consider the potential consequences, as it could be your life at stake.”

Both of Nathan’s parents shared the agony of no longer being able to embrace their son. Ali was sentenced to three years and seven months in prison in July. Harle received a 12-month suspended imprisonment term and was ordered to perform 150 hours of community service.

On the night of his passing, Nathan was in his residence with friends, consuming alcohol. A female who ingested some MDMA reported feeling paranoid and physically ill.

Both Nathan and Harle experienced hallucinations, but Nathan’s condition deteriorated significantly. After becoming increasingly unwell and vocal around 4:30 am, he was attended to by others. Paramedics were dispatched, and he was transported to the hospital, where he succumbed at 7:23 am. Examinations revealed that Nathan had ingested a substantial and likely fatal dose of MDMA.

Detective Sergeant David Wylam, of Northumbria Police, cautioned, “The consumption of illegal substances carries a genuine risk of life-threatening or life-altering outcomes. The true nature of these substances remains unknown. Opting to use them can have enduring and devastating repercussions.”
