Airport authorities were surprised to find an abandoned aircraft “resting nose-down in the grass beside a runway” earlier this week. The pilot of the damaged Cessna Skyhawk, manufactured in 1972, was missing, and it was evident that the plane had veered off the runway following a hard landing on Tuesday.
The unoccupied Cessna N20392 was discovered around 5 am at Naples Municipal Airport in Florida, during a period when the airport’s control tower was closed from 10 pm to 6 am. Security personnel reported seeing two individuals leaving the aircraft shortly after it landed in the middle of a grassy field, appearing unharmed, which added to the mystery.
Robin King, the communications director at the airport, mentioned to FOX4 that they found the aircraft in the field at 5 am, and security had released the two individuals safely. Flight data indicated that the plane had circled over Fort Myers and Naples before landing at Naples Airport around 2:40 am, necessitating a runway closure until the disabled plane was removed by 6:30 am.
In a separate interview with WINK News, King described the situation as unusual and mysterious. The pilot, identified as 24-year-old Brianna Brown, returned to the scene later, after the plane had been taken away for inspection. Lt. Bryan McGinn of the Naples Police Department stated that the pilot had slid off the runway but had informed the staff.
It was revealed that Brown had rented the plane from Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport and had flown it to Naples. An incident report was filed by the police, and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) was notified for further investigation. Brown, from Fort Lauderdale, was unharmed and is cooperating with the ongoing investigation, with uncertainty about potential charges for her or the unidentified second individual on board.
