Shaun Murphy expressed strong dissatisfaction towards Matchroom for the way Monday’s Champion of Champions event was scheduled. This frustration stemmed from his recent participation in China’s International Championship quarter-finals just four days prior.
The Magician found himself thrust into the opening match of the tournament, where he suffered a significant 4-1 loss to Lei Peifan. Murphy, aged 43, disclosed that he only became aware of his Monday fixture while returning from Nanjing, discovering the event’s order on the morning of the tournament.
Following his defeat, Murphy voiced his anger over the group arrangements, stating to ITV4, “I conduct myself as professionally as I possibly can. I try and treat the game with an incredible amount of respect. I think the way I’ve been treated by Matchroom in this tournament is nothing short of despicable.”
Murphy criticized Matchroom for their handling of the event, expressing disappointment in the lack of communication and professionalism in the formatting. He emphasized feeling disrespected by the organization’s decisions, particularly regarding the timing of his matches.
In response to Murphy’s criticisms, Matchroom issued a statement acknowledging his frustrations and emphasizing their commitment to player priorities and transparency in the event’s organization. They mentioned that groupings are based on seeding for fairness and that they aim to improve scheduling challenges in the future.
Elsewhere on the opening day of the Champion of Champions, World No. 1 Judd Trump secured a 4-1 victory over Bai Yulu, advancing to face Lei later in the evening. The tournament continues with upcoming matches featuring other top players, including Kyren Wilson, Mark Allen, Mark Williams, and more in the following days.
