Aldi has regained its position as the most budget-friendly supermarket in the UK, according to recent research by consumer group Which?. The study compared prices of a 70-item shopping list across various supermarkets. Aldi came out on top with an average cost of £121.22, narrowly beating out Lidl at £122.35 and Tesco at £136.20 after Clubcard savings.
On the other end of the spectrum, Waitrose was found to be the priciest option, with an average cost of £166.79 for the same items. The comparison also extended to a larger list of 183 groceries, excluding Aldi and Lidl due to their focus on own-brand products. Asda emerged as the most economical choice for the extensive shopping list, costing £455.52 on average, while Waitrose stood as the most expensive at £522.91.
Which? Retail Editor, Reena Sewraz, highlighted the ongoing competition between Aldi and Lidl for the top spot in affordability. She emphasized that Asda remains one of the most cost-effective options for a wider range of branded goods. With the holiday season approaching, consumers are advised to compare prices across supermarkets to potentially save up to 27% on their grocery bills.
