Labour has a history of strong deputy leaders like Prescott, Harman, and Rayner, who have effectively represented the party’s core values in government. I aim to continue in their footsteps as deputy leader, supporting the Labour government while ensuring it stays true to the principles that resonate with party members.
My focus will be on tackling child poverty as a key moral objective of this administration. I am committed to achieving a significant reduction in child poverty during this parliamentary term by leveraging the authority granted to me through the membership’s endorsement.
Growing up in impoverished conditions myself, I entered politics driven by a personal understanding of the challenges faced by disadvantaged families. As Education Secretary, I have prioritized initiatives benefiting working-class households, such as implementing free breakfast clubs, expanding free school meal programs, and introducing subsidized childcare for young children.
I have demonstrated a willingness to challenge entrenched interests in order to champion the needs of working people, exemplified by my efforts to redirect funds from private schools to support state education. This proactive approach distinguishes the impact a Labour government can make, emphasizing the choice of governance over mere protest.
In his recent address to the Labour conference, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese highlighted the arduous task of effecting change compared to simply demanding it. Upholding principles within the system requires greater perseverance than criticizing it from outside.
Labour’s ability to lift children out of poverty rests on its capacity to govern, not merely oppose. This underscores the importance of unity within the party, particularly as we face upcoming critical elections across the UK where a divided stance could play into the hands of divisive figures like Farage.
As deputy leader mandated by the party membership, my aim is to foster party cohesion, embed Labour values in government policies, and lead the charge against extremist ideologies represented by figures like Farage and the far right.
