The dramatic downfall of Andrew Mounbatten Windsor, once a beloved son of the late Queen, to a disgraced former duke has brought attention to the treatment of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
Following public outcry over sexual assault allegations against Andrew and his association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, Buckingham Palace made a significant decision. King Charles initiated the process of officially revoking Andrew’s royal titles and relocating him from Royal Lodge to Sandringham on the monarch’s private estate.
Despite Andrew’s previous announcement to relinquish his titles voluntarily, the King’s formal removal of them marked a significant step. Having stepped back from royal duties six years ago, Andrew faced further consequences in early 2022 when his royal patronages, military roles, and security were stripped away due to a civil case filed against him by Virginia Giuffre.
In contrast, when Harry and Meghan decided to step back from their royal duties, they faced a different outcome. Their taxpayer-funded security was abruptly withdrawn, and in 2023, following the publication of Harry’s revealing memoir, they were asked to vacate Frogmore Cottage despite prior rent payments and repayment for renovations.
A royal expert, Afua Acheampong-Hagan, expressed concerns regarding the differential treatment between Andrew and Harry/Meghan. She highlighted the perceived favoritism towards Andrew and criticized the lack of support extended to Harry and Meghan, particularly in light of Meghan’s struggles with mental health.
Meghan had publicly shared her challenges with royal life and mental health during a documentary, acknowledging the lack of support she felt. In a candid interview with Oprah Winfrey, she revealed her battle with suicidal thoughts. Harry, in his memoir, referenced the disparity in treatment, noting that despite Andrew’s scandal, his security was retained, unlike their situation.
The expert emphasized the protection afforded to Andrew, the Queen’s favored son, contrasting it with the perceived neglect towards Meghan’s well-being during her royal tenure.
