Paraglider Attack Kills 24 at Myanmar Protest

At least 24 individuals lost their lives during demonstrations against Myanmar’s military regime when a paraglider dropped two explosive devices into the crowd. The incident occurred as approximately 100 people gathered in Chaung U township in central Myanmar on Monday to mark the conclusion of Buddhist Lent.

The military junta in Myanmar took control in 2021, leading to a civil conflict. Despite losing authority over more than half of the nation, the army has been reclaiming territory through intense airstrikes. The targeted area is a crucial battleground in the struggle against armed insurgent factions, including volunteer militias collectively known as the People’s Defence Force (PDF).

Local authorities attempted to halt the protests, but the attack unfolded swiftly, with the bombs being unleashed within seven minutes. Eyewitnesses recounted the devastation, with injuries and fatalities reported. Identifying the victims proved challenging in the aftermath of the tragic event.

One organizer, who was absent during the incident but attended subsequent funerals, described the gruesome aftermath, stating that individuals were still retrieving body parts. Amnesty International condemned the use of paramotors, highlighting the urgent need for civilian protection in Myanmar.

Due to stringent international sanctions, Myanmar’s ruling authorities have struggled to acquire military resources, although China and Russia continue to provide sophisticated drones and military technology, bolstering the junta’s combat capabilities. The peaceful candlelight vigil staged on Monday was a plea against military conscription and upcoming elections, with demands for the release of political detainees, including the ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
