“Psycho” Legacy Reignites After “Monster” Removal

After Netflix removed “Monster: The Ed Gein Story,” viewers have revisited classic horror movies that drew inspiration from the notorious killer, such as Alfred Hitchcock’s iconic film, Psycho.

Released in 1960, Psycho is hailed as one of the greatest horror films ever made and propelled actor Anthony Perkins, who portrayed Norman Bates, to stardom.

Although remembered for his chilling performance, Anthony Perkins faced personal struggles throughout his career, with his son Oz Perkins acknowledging the challenges associated with his father’s famous role.

Netflix’s “Monster: The Ed Gein Story” explores the connection between Ed Gein’s crimes and the creation of Psycho, highlighting the eerie similarities between Norman Bates and Gein’s relationship with his mother.

In the series, viewers witness Alfred Hitchcock and author Robert Bloch delving into Gein’s atrocities, with Hitchcock even presenting a replica of Gein’s residence to Anthony Perkins.

Describing Gein as “history’s most singular ghoul,” the show delves into the transformation of a seemingly ordinary man in Plainfield, Wisconsin, into a monstrous figure, emphasizing the notion that monsters are not born but created by society.

Before his iconic role in Psycho, Anthony Perkins earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor in the film “Friendly Persuasion.” However, his association with Psycho led to typecasting, prompting him to break his contract with Paramount and pursue opportunities in Europe.

Despite the success of Psycho, Anthony Perkins faced challenges due to the conservative climate of the time, forcing him to conceal his sexuality during his Hollywood tenure.

Anthony Perkins married actress Berry Berenson in 1973, and the couple appeared in films together, maintaining their partnership until Perkins’ death in 1992 from Aids-related pneumonia. Tragically, Berenson perished in the 9/11 attacks in 2001.

Anthony Perkins is survived by his sons, Oz Perkins and Elvis. Oz, known for his role in Psycho II, has transitioned into directing horror films, while Elvis has pursued a career in music, releasing his debut album in 2007.

“Monster: The Ed Gein Story” is now available for streaming on Netflix.
