Sean “P. Diddy” Combs’ legal representatives have confirmed that they will be filing an appeal following his sentencing to four years in prison on Friday. The 55-year-old artist, known as Diddy, was convicted of two counts of transportation for prostitution back in July and has been serving his sentence at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.
After the sentencing, defense attorney Brian Steel expressed disagreement with the outcome, stating that he believes the sentence conveys the wrong message and that Diddy was penalized for behavior the jury did not find him guilty of. Steel criticized the decision, emphasizing that it seems unjust to sentence someone for actions they were acquitted of by a jury.
In response to whether he believed the judge’s ruling was erroneous, Steel remarked, “We’ll find out on appeal.” Another attorney, Marc Agnifilo, voiced similar sentiments, suggesting that the judge played the role of a “13th juror” and contradicted the jury’s clear verdict. Agnifilo reiterated that the jury specifically convicted Diddy of prostitution-related charges, not sex trafficking or racketeering.
Describing the sentence as a “very bad day for everybody,” Steel highlighted the impact of imprisoning an individual based on conduct that the jury had already deliberated on and dismissed. During the sentencing, U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian directly addressed Diddy, recognizing his achievements as a self-made artist and entrepreneur who has positively influenced communities despite facing challenges early in life.
Judge Subramanian acknowledged the seriousness of the conviction, noting that while Diddy will endure prison time away from his family, he will have the opportunity to rebuild his life afterward. The judge also emphasized the public nature of Diddy’s actions and the impact they have had, particularly on women who may feel powerless, commending Diddy for giving them a voice and standing up against injustice.
