A tragic incident at Meadowridge Academy in Swansea, Massachusetts, has left a school staff member, Amy Morrell, dead after being allegedly kicked in the chest by a teenage pupil. The 53-year-old victim was attacked by a 14-year-old girl who was reportedly trying to leave a residence hall without permission. Despite Morrell’s attempts to restrain the pupil, she was kicked in the chest, leading to her collapse shortly after. Colleagues immediately administered CPR and called emergency services, but Morrell passed away the following day.
The unnamed teenager has been charged with assault and battery causing serious bodily injury and appeared in court on Thursday. Andrew Ferruche, a close family friend of Morrell, expressed shock over the incident, highlighting the tragic nature of the situation and the impact it has had on both families involved.
Meadowridge Academy, described as a comprehensive therapeutic residential school near the Rhode Island border, provides specialized treatment for individuals aged 12 to 21 with mental health and behavioral challenges. The academy, which had 35 enrolled students last year, is one of several programs operated by the Justice Resource Institute.
Advocates like Jennie DunKley stress the importance of implementing effective strategies to prevent similar escalations in the future, emphasizing the need to avoid situations that may lead to restraint or seclusion. The school community mourns the loss of Amy Morrell, offering support to her family and counseling services to students and staff during this difficult time. The police investigation into the tragic incident remains ongoing.
