As the new academic year kicks off, numerous students are delving into a novel educational experience that is revolutionizing their learning, dietary habits, and overall growth.

Tesco Fruit & Veg for Schools is an unprecedented program that supplies abundant portions of nutritious food to schools catering to a significant percentage of students eligible for free meals. This initiative aims to enhance children’s well-being and academic performance.

Among the participating schools is Ark Putney Academy in southwest London, which recently welcomed actor and comedian Babatunde Aléshé. Babatunde engaged with students, providing a lively lesson on the importance of consuming five servings of fruits and vegetables daily.

The Fruit & Veg for Schools project was introduced in 2024 and in its inaugural year, distributed over 10.8 million portions of fresh produce to 411 schools. This initiative has now expanded to include more than 500 schools for the current academic year, ensuring each student receives a daily serving of fruits and vegetables.

Feedback from teachers involved in the program’s previous cycle revealed a remarkable 94% improvement in student behavior, with pupils demonstrating enhanced focus, increased energy levels, and better conduct. Moreover, all teachers unanimously agreed that Tesco Fruit & Veg for Schools positively impacted the lives of the students it reached.

Babatunde emphasized the satiating effect of consuming fruits and vegetables, highlighting their role in providing energy for classroom activities. Drawing from personal experience, he recalled the positive impact of healthier meal options during his school days.

The assortment of available items includes bananas, blueberries, avocados, and spinach, which can be utilized in breakfast clubs or healthy snack stations within schools. This initiative complements Tesco Stronger Starts by funding essential food and activity resources for schools and community groups, promoting a healthier lifestyle for children in the UK.

Babatunde emphasized the educational aspect of the program, stating that it not only provides nutritious meals but also educates children on the health benefits of various fruits and vegetables. By empowering them with knowledge, children are encouraged to make healthier food choices.

The emotional impact of the program was evident as some schools appointed students struggling with confidence as “fruit monitors,” fostering self-assurance and a sense of purpose among them.

Tesco UK CEO Ashwin Prasad expressed satisfaction with the positive outcomes reported by schools participating in the program. By expanding the initiative, Tesco aims to reach more young individuals in underprivileged communities, offering them greater access to fresh produce.

With an increasing number of schools and students benefiting from the program, Tesco’s initiative is not just nourishing children but also sowing the seeds for a healthier future.
