A talented young jockey, Bryson Butterfly, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for his involvement in the tragic death of a high school student. Butterfly, a Native American from Washington State, had been gaining recognition in horse racing circles in Maryland, West Virginia, and Philadelphia.
The incident occurred in 2023 when Butterfly was arrested along with two others for the murder of 17-year-old Elias Cieslak in Baltimore County. He later pleaded guilty to a conspiracy charge related to armed robbery and agreed to cooperate with authorities against his co-defendants.
According to reports, Butterfly confessed to arranging a marijuana deal with Cieslak, knowing that two individuals, Marcus Powell and David Lofton, intended to rob him. Tragically, Cieslak was fatally shot during the attempted robbery.
Powell accepted guilt and received a life sentence with 40 years suspended, while Lofton’s trial ended with a similar life sentence and a 50-year suspension, pending an appeal.
During the court proceedings, Butterfly, dressed in an orange jumpsuit and handcuffed, expressed remorse for his actions, stating that he felt threatened by Powell, who was armed when he arrived at Butterfly’s residence.
In an emotional moment in court, Butterfly tearfully apologized to the victim’s family, acknowledging his wrongdoing. Despite the judge recognizing his regret, she upheld the prosecution’s request for a lengthy prison term, emphasizing the need for accountability in Cieslak’s tragic death.
The judge lamented the wasted potential of someone like Butterfly and stressed the importance of holding him responsible for his role in the crime.
