A tragic incident unfolded when a couple was discovered lifeless in a scorching hot bathtub shortly after celebrating their daughter’s birthday. The deceased individuals, Jeferson Luiz Sagaz, 37, and Ana Carolina Silva, 41, were found in a motel room on August 11. Medical professionals determined that their deaths resulted from a combination of heatstroke and organ failure. The alarm was raised by their family after they failed to collect their daughter.
The couple had spent the evening celebrating their daughter’s fourth birthday at a food park and later went to a nightclub. After dropping off their child at Jeferson’s sister’s residence, they checked into the Dallas Motel in São José, Brazil, just past midnight.
A missing persons investigation was initiated by the police, leading to the discovery of the couple’s lifeless bodies in the bathroom. The investigators revealed that Jeferson, a military police officer, and Ana Carolina, a nail salon owner, had lost consciousness in water at 50 degrees Celsius while a space heater was operating.
According to reports from local news outlet Globo G1, toxicology tests indicated high alcohol levels and traces of cocaine in their systems. The Civil Police conducted 16 forensic tests ruling out potential causes such as electric shock, drowning, carbon monoxide poisoning, or foul play. As part of the inquiry, law enforcement scrutinized the motel room, the couple’s vehicle, and reviewed CCTV footage.
Brazil’s Chief Medical Examiner, Andressa Boer Fronza, stated that the cause of death for both individuals was exogenous poisoning, exacerbating heatstroke leading to severe dehydration, thermal collapse, organ failure, and eventual death.
Chief of Police Felipe Simão Gomes stated that the circumstances surrounding the deaths, in conjunction with the substances detected in the bodies, led the Civil Police to conclude that the deaths were sudden and not a result of external interference. The couple, who had been together for nearly two decades, were characterized by friends as dedicated parents and socially active individuals with no history of violence, as per the police.
The family of Ana Carolina refuted allegations that she was a regular drug user, expressing concerns that she may have been coerced into consuming cocaine. Chief Simão remarked, “It may be that the physical constitution, both his and hers, were not compatible with the use of a substance like that, especially when combined with alcohol.”
