“Mayor Urges Province for Police Support Amid Gun Violence Spike”

Fort St. John’s mayor is urgently requesting additional police support from the province to address a concerning rise in gun violence near schools in northeastern British Columbia. This plea follows what authorities suspect to be the third deliberate shooting incident at a residence in the city on Friday night.

Limited information has been disclosed at this point, with no suspects identified by the police. Mayor Lilia Hansen is advocating for the deployment of B.C.’s gang task force to curb the escalating violence, emphasizing the need for a more robust law enforcement presence.

Expressing deep concern, Hansen stated, “One shooting is tragic, two is alarming, but three is unacceptable. We must put an end to this.” The RCMP is actively investigating the series of shootings that commenced on July 22, resulting in at least one individual being wounded and subsequently charged.

While details about injuries from the recent shooting are yet to be confirmed officially, local residents reported witnessing one person being transported to the hospital by ambulance, with suspicions of additional casualties. Sergeant Jaime Moffat assured the public that intensive efforts are underway to apprehend the perpetrators and prevent further violent incidents.

The community is increasingly apprehensive as the new school year approaches, particularly given that each shooting occurred in close proximity to elementary and middle schools. Resident Thomas Whitton, a father of four, expressed shock over the sudden surge in violence near his home, emphasizing the need for swift and decisive action by law enforcement and judicial authorities to bring the culprits to justice and ensure public safety.

Reflecting on the proximity of the violence to where children reside, Whitton stressed the importance of preventing such incidents, especially with students set to return to school shortly. Local education board chair Helen Gilbert echoed these sentiments, highlighting the gravity of innocent individuals potentially getting caught in the crossfire of these dangerous events.

The community remains on edge, emphasizing the critical need for enhanced security measures to safeguard residents, particularly as the school year draws near.
