Fifteen-year-old Finn Holland, a lover of animals, took action when he discovered a shark stranded near his home in Maces Bay, New Brunswick. With his family’s support, Finn rescued the injured porbeagle shark by guiding it back into the ocean.
Initially hesitant due to the shark’s size and weight, Finn eventually helped the creature back to safety. His mother, Jill Holland, expressed pride in Finn’s spontaneous act of kindness, noting that it was typical of his compassionate nature.
The rare sighting of the porbeagle shark in shallow waters surprised experts like Neil Hammerschlag, who highlighted the species’ ability to regulate body temperature. Hammerschlag speculated that the shark may have been distressed, possibly due to illness or interaction with fishing gear, as their population has dwindled due to overfishing.
Despite the species being declared endangered in the Atlantic Ocean, Finn’s courageous rescue effort has garnered significant community support. Reflecting on the experience, Finn emphasized the gratification of knowing he did the right thing, even without direct gratitude from the rescued animal.
