“Evacuation Orders Eased Near Quilpituk Creek Wildfire”

Residents of approximately 2,400 households near the Quilpituk Creek wildfire area received some positive news today as evacuation orders were eased to alerts, allowing them to return home. The Regional District of Central Okanagan’s Kari O’Rourke expressed relief at the development, highlighting the staged re-entry process implemented to manage traffic flow.

The B.C. Wildfire Service reported that the fire is currently “being held,” indicating no further growth is expected. Fortunately, no structures have been lost in the fire, which has been active for about two weeks and covers over 1,200 hectares. Despite the progress, challenges such as ash, soot, smoke residue, and debris on properties and roads persist, prompting O’Rourke to advise residents to bring essential supplies for self-sufficiency.

One resident, James Britton, shared his experience after returning home following multiple evacuations in recent years. He mentioned the cleanliness of his house but highlighted the need for cleanup due to ash accumulation. Britton also commended the community’s support and the crucial role of recently installed generators in aiding firefighting efforts.

While some locals, like Britton, expressed resilience in the face of recurring wildfires, others, such as business owner Ryan Hargreaves, faced significant challenges due to the evacuation, including the loss of perishable food stock. Hargreaves reflected on the devastation faced by neighboring communities, underscoring the impact of the fires on the region.

In a separate development, evacuation orders for Peachland residents have been downgraded, allowing them to return home, with plans for gradual re-entry of affected neighborhoods. The Mayor of Summerland, Doug Holmes, emphasized the community’s eagerness to resume normalcy but cautioned that evacuation alerts remain in effect, urging residents to stay prepared for any changes in the situation.
