“TIFF Ticket Prices Soar, Fans Reconsider Gala Attendance”

Arjun Singh recalls his early experiences at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2022 when he purchased tickets to the debut of the film “The Woman King” for $50 each. This year, he noticed that premium balcony seats for similar screenings, which often feature a Q-and-A session with the cast or director, were being sold for up to $106.

The increase in ticket prices has led some attendees, like Toronto non-profit worker Arjun Singh, to reconsider attending galas and opt for regular festival screenings due to the escalating costs. Fans have observed a significant spike in ticket prices this year, with films other than the opening and closing night galas surpassing the $100 mark.

Attendees have reported exorbitant prices for premieres of highly anticipated films like “Fjord,” “Prima Facie,” and “Love of Your Life,” with tickets reaching as high as $106. Some have even shared screenshots on Reddit showing tickets in the front rows of premieres being sold for $128, a significant increase from last year’s prices.

Despite multiple requests for comment on ticket pricing, TIFF did not respond.

Joel Chico, an actor who spends an estimated $2,000 on premium screening tickets annually, expressed the financial strain of buying tickets for himself and friends. Despite the high costs, many fans, like Chico, continue to attend due to the unique experience of watching a film alongside the cast.

“I adore TIFF. It’s like an annual treat for me, but the expenses are becoming unreasonable nowadays,” Chico remarked.

Despite typically releasing price ranges for all ticket types leading up to the festival, TIFF did not disclose the maximum cost for seats in each category this year. Regular screenings for non-members started at $30, while premium screenings began at $46. However, a browsing session by The Canadian Press revealed premium seats selling for up to $106.

Prior to the festival, TIFF offered a $2 discount on regular screenings for members and advertised $15 tickets for select screenings, although details on these seats were
