“Mom Overcomes Fear of Son’s Allergies, Embraces Independence”

After unknowingly triggering an anaphylactic reaction in her 18-month-old son Simon by giving him a cashew, Morgan Klachefsky found herself rushing him to the Winnipeg HSC Children’s Emergency Department. Simon was diagnosed with a severe cashew and pistachio allergy following the incident.

Feeling overwhelmed by the constant fear of her son’s life-threatening allergies, Klachefsky embarked on a mission to educate herself and those caring for Simon. Despite her efforts to be prepared and vigilant, her fear began to consume her, making it challenging to entrust Simon’s care to anyone but herself and her husband.

As Simon grew older and more independent, Klachefsky realized she needed to address her mental health and relinquish some control. Encouraged by Simon’s bravery, she gradually started entrusting others with his safety, allowing him to attend events without constant supervision.

Teaching Simon to manage his allergies responsibly, Klachefsky emphasized the importance of vigilance and collaboration in keeping him safe. This approach led to Simon attending sleepaway camp for the first time, a significant milestone that required Klachefsky to place her trust in others to safeguard her son.

Despite her fears, Klachefsky acknowledged the necessity of letting go and allowing Simon to experience life fully, with each step towards independence strengthening their bond and resilience. Embracing a collaborative approach and refusing to let fear dictate their actions, the family navigated the challenges of living with severe allergies together.
