“Veterans’ Battle for Justice Unearths Nuked Blood Scandal”

In 2006, I received a call from Craig Prescott seeking help to address the injustice faced by his late father, Roy. Roy, a participant in nuclear weapons testing, passed away without receiving a war pension due to the Ministry of Defence’s denial of liability. Despite Craig’s persistence, it took months to secure a widow’s pension for his mother. The underlying issue was that British troops involved in American tests were not compensated, unlike their American counterparts.

My background as a defense reporter in Plymouth provided insight into the MoD’s workings and nuclear risks. Craig’s determination to seek justice for his father was inspiring. The Mirror had been advocating for veterans since 1984, with investigative reports highlighting health issues among former soldiers exposed to nuclear testing.

Roy was among 500 Royal Engineers exposed to Cold War weapon trials, with many veterans reporting health problems and genetic damage comparable to Chernobyl clean-up workers. Legal battles ensued as veterans sought acknowledgment and compensation for their suffering. Despite challenges, the veterans persisted, conducting research, uncovering new documents, and campaigning for recognition.

After years of effort, a campaign for a medal finally succeeded, bringing a sense of validation to veterans. However, the delivery of the medal in a casual manner stirred disappointment among some recipients. The veterans’ struggle sparked renewed interest and uncovered crucial evidence of the harmful effects of nuclear testing, leading to a widespread scandal known as the Nuked Blood Scandal.

The scandal prompted government inquiries, police reviews, and legal actions, shedding light on classified documents and revealing the extent of the veterans’ ordeal. The fight for justice continues, with ongoing investigations and public awareness efforts. As I conclude my time at the Mirror, I extend gratitude to the readers and the dedicated team behind the scenes for their support over the years.
