“30-Year Death Row Inmate Executed Amid Claims of Innocence”

A man who had persistently denied his involvement in the abduction, sexual assault, and killing of a student over three decades ago was put to death today. Charles Crawford, who had maintained his innocence in the case of Kristy Ray, spent more than 30 years on death row before being executed. Despite Crawford’s continuous claims of innocence, a jury found him guilty of kidnapping the 20-year-old student from her family home in Mississippi.

After numerous failed attempts to overturn his death sentence, 59-year-old Crawford received a lethal injection at the Mississippi State Penitentiary, the state’s oldest prison. He passed away within minutes of the execution. In his final statement, Crawford expressed love for his family, conveyed a sense of peace, and mentioned looking forward to being in heaven. He also offered words of closure and peace to Ray’s family, emphasizing the importance of faith.

The execution of Crawford follows the recent death of Richard Gerald Jordan, Mississippi’s longest-serving death row inmate, who was convicted of kidnapping and murdering a bank loan officer’s wife. Additionally, a father who had denied involvement in the killing of a police officer was executed in Missouri earlier this week.

During the 1993 investigation, Crawford claimed not to remember the rape or murder. Despite his assertions, he was found guilty, and his efforts to challenge the death sentence were unsuccessful over the years. Krissy Nobile, who represented Crawford, criticized the legal process, suggesting that his attorney did not prioritize his wishes throughout the case.

Following Crawford’s execution, the Mississippi Office of Capital Post-Conviction Counsel released a statement indicating that Crawford did not receive a fair trial. The statement highlighted Crawford’s efforts to lead a positive life in prison and assist other inmates, despite the legal system’s shortcomings.

Court records revealed that Crawford had broken into the Ray family home, kidnapped Kristy, left a ransom note, and took her to a remote barn in the woods, where he committed the assault and murder. Despite initially claiming innocence and stating a blackout during the incident, Crawford was arrested a day later, coming back from a hunting trip.
