“12-Year Delay: Man Sentenced for College Assault”

A man recently received a prison sentence of two to four years in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, for assaulting a woman he had attacked 12 years earlier while they were both university students. The victim reported the assault to the police at the time, but no action was taken until the recent development.

The assailant, identified as Ian Cleary, now 32 years old, forced his way into the woman’s residence hall, entered her room, and sexually assaulted her on the eve of the Christmas break. The victim was an 18-year-old student in her first semester on campus. Despite the passage of time, Cleary’s actions resurfaced in 2019 when he sent a disturbing Facebook message to the woman, claiming it was part of a rehabilitation program seeking forgiveness.

During the sentencing, the victim expressed her disappointment in the system’s failure to protect her initially. The court acknowledged that Cleary could have faced up to 10 years in prison but received a lesser sentence. The victim’s lawyer, Andrea Levy, remarked that while the sentence was below expectations, there was relief that the case had finally concluded.

Although the judge condemned Cleary’s actions, he recognized the assailant’s admission of guilt and desire for contrition. Cleary had left Gettysburg following the assault and completed his studies in Silicon Valley, California. He returned to Pennsylvania, where he admitted to his crime in court. The victim, who had awaited justice for over a decade, emphasized the lasting impact of the incident on her and her family.

The victim expressed mixed feelings during the recent court hearing, acknowledging the long-awaited accountability while lamenting the lost evidence and the enduring impact on her life and those around her.
